Your assignment is to create a few websites. First you'll make a nice simple one, and then you'll move on to progressively harder ones. Ah, but you say that you don't know how to make a web page? Never fear! We have help for you.
Go to Portable Apps and download KompoZer. Install this on your flash drive/thumb drive/pen drive/USB drive (or whatever you call the thing).
Start up KompoZer. This is a simple webpage creation program that can do really pretty incredible things.
Assignment 1
For your first assignment, you are going to create a simple webpage that has:
- A red background
- Green Texts
- Pictures of Christmas trees
- A paragraph telling us the story of St. Nicholas.
Assignment 2
If you've mastered the really tricky stuff in the first assignment, try this one on for size.
- Create a table. Make it three columns wide and three rows high.
- Put pictures in all the boxes EXCEPT the center one.
- Put a title for your table in the middle box.
- Give the page a background color.
- Give the table a different background color.
- Can you give each of the table boxes/cells a different color?
- Wasn't that easy?
Assignment 3
Okay, now you've learned a bit about tables. Let's try making some links.
- Create a simple webpage about elephants, giant squid, or sea cucumbers.
- Your page should have a couple of pictures, and a paragraph or two of information.
- You shuld then create 10/ten/dix links to other sites on the Internet that have information on your topic.
- Set your links up in a list something like the one you're looking at.
- Your links should not look like http://www.google.ca, but Google. (We shouldn't see the code.)
Assignment 4
Let's put the concepts from Assignments 3 and 4 together.
- Create a table that has one row and two cells/boxes.
- It would look something like this.
| Links | Content |
- When you've done that, pick a topic for your webpage. Go for either country music or computers.
- Put the content in the right hand box, and in the left hand one put links to other sites.
- Give each cell/box a different color.
Assignment 5
Okay, today you need to create a folder/directory in which you're going to create two files.
- The first file is the front page of your website. You are going to save this file and call it "index." Make sure you save it in the folder you created.
- The second file can be called whatever you like.
- Link from the first page to the second, and from the second back to the first.
- Put some content on both pages, including pictures. Pick any topic you like as long as it's in good taste.
Assignment 6
"What today?" you're wondering to yourself.
Well, taking all that you've learned so far,
- Create a web page. Pick a cool image and use that as your background. These sites might be helpful.
- With your pretty new background, create a page on a topic of your choice. Of course, your topic needs to be in good taste.
- You need to have links to other sites on the web.
- You should have at least one picture.
- You should find a way to use a table.
Assignment 7
With a partner, you are going to create a small site for a store that you are making.
- It should have 4 pages.
- It should have a theme, a consistent look. The pages should have the same font, the same layout, and the same background image or color.
- The look should be suited to your store. For example, a men's wear store likely wouldn't be mainly pink.
- It should have several pictures that you take of things around you (chairs, tables, food, clothes, etc) which is the merchandise your store sells.
- Give us the location of your store/s and a way to contact you.
- The photos you use might need to be re-sized. This can be easily accomplished in MS Photo Editor, already on the school computers.
