Course Content

This course is intended to build on and expand the computer skills students picked up in elementary and middle years classes. However, since this is being done in a Christian school, it's not enough to merely learn to use the tools, but we have to think about why we're using them. Teenagers today have a greater ability to communicate an idea around the world than any generation that has ever lived in the history of the world. That is real power. However, "with great power comes great responsibility." Knowing who you are ultimately responsible to, how will you use that power?

The course is project based and will consist of several sections.

  1. Introduction to RSS and Blogging.
  2. Laying out a story using storyboarding techniques.
    • The class will be given a commonly known story such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Rumpelstiltskin. They will be expected to lay it out in a simple storyboard format as if preparing to make a short film based on the fairy tale.
  3. Making a Website
    • Individual webpages, and then a small website will be developed for this section.
    • This will likely be done using page creation tools like GooglePages.
  4. Simulating simple animation and Making A Stop Motion Video
    • This will be done using the Pivot Stick Figure Animation program, Stop Motion Animator software and Windows Movie Maker.
    • The results of the Stick Figure Animation will be presented as an animated gif, and the Stop Motion product will be shown as a simple short movie.
    • The Stop Motion Animator software will employ "claymation" techniques to create a short, animated video.
  5. Introduction to wikis/Creating a Virtual Field Trip
    • A "virtual field trip assignment will be attempted on a wiki on Wikidot.com, and regular status updates will be provided using blogs such as 21 Classes.

Sections 1 and 2 will be done right after each other.
Due to shortages of equipment, different groups will be assigned sections 3, 4, and 5 to do at different times. In other words, while you're doing section 4, your friend might be doing section 5 and some other people might do section 3. Everyone will do all the parts, they'll just do sections 3, 4 and 5 in a different order.

Major Assignments 50%
Smaller Assignments 40%

Each section of the course will have one major assignment and at least one smaller one. Reflecting the way computing is done today, most of the assignments will be collaborative projects.

There will not be a final exam.
